AC Disconnects provide a means of protection by allowing power to be disconnected  from air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.  Per the 2008 National Electric Code (NEC Article 440 Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Equipment).  The disconnect must be located within sight from and readily accessible from the air conditioning or refrigeration equipment.
